Dale Farm, an Amazing Place to Volunteer

A Volunteer’s Story

Nestled in the heart of Heswall Dales, hidden away behind the trees, you would be forgiven if you never knew Dale Farm existed.

Dale Farm offers a wide range of activities and opportunities for people with learning and physical difficulties work based opportunities from horticultural skills to beekeeping. The farm is a hub where individuals can develop new skills, forge friendships, and enjoy a sense of belonging. Beyond what meets the eye, it plays a vital role in empowering people and fostering inclusion.

The farm is a community of people that treat each other like family, which is built on trust, kindness, and mutual support. In such an environment, individuals genuinely care for one another’s wellbeing, celebrate successes together, and offer help during challenging times. This sense of belonging fosters strong relationships and creates a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels valued and included. Many of the supported people have been going to the farm for many years, even decades.

For me, adapting to a spinal injury and other health issues was difficult, but over the years I began to feel excluded from society, with organisations turning me away on health grounds. Dale Farm welcomed me, trying to discover my strengths and what I could do and how they could help me. The sense of purpose I found on the farm has been transformative. The supportive community here helped me rediscover my strengths, offering encouragement and understanding. Now, I genuinely feel valued and included, and each day brings a renewed sense of hope and belonging.

Below are rare images of me in front of the camera instead of behind it.

Since joining the farm three years ago I have been involved in various projects as well as developing this website. Over time, I’ve gained valuable experience working alongside a dedicated team, learning new skills and contributing to the community. Last year, I became a trustee, which has given me a greater insight into the running of the farm and allowed me to feel like I still have value despite my physical restrictions.

All the staff are friendly and you can get involved with projects as little or as much as you like. The atmosphere is welcoming and supportive, making it easy to settle in and find your place. You can volunteer when it suits you. The most important skills of all are patience, kindness and to care about people. There are plenty of opportunities to make a real difference, whether you’re helping out with daily tasks or getting involved in larger initiatives.

The farm is always looking for volunteers, if you feel that you would like to be part of this amazing place, why not come down for an informal chat, or you could always fill in our volunteer form.
