Pond Facelift

The planting area around the pond has been inaccessible to the people we support and volunteers for some time. As a consequence the area has become overgrown and in need of some tender loving care. It was decided to make the space more usable and to improve access by creating a new low maintenance barrel garden between the two ponds.

The area marked is the area to be improved. In order to make the area safe and accessible the following work was required:

  • Make safe the walls around the ponds.
  • Clear the overgrown planting and weeds.
  • Put a weed membrane, topsoil and gravel around the ponds.
  • Acquire and put in the new planting barrels.
  • Prune overgrown shrubbery.
  • Make a new safe access platform and add a new gate to the existing fencing.

There was a lot of clearing to be done and some of the plants had rooted into the retaining walls. Work was required to rebuild the upper wall as well as ensuring that the lower wall was made safe.

A weed membrane was added to reduce the amount of weeds that would be able to grow in the new gravelled barrel garden.

Below you can see further work that was performed. Topsoil and gravel was added on top of the weed membrane. A new walkway was created and a new gate added into the existing fencing to create easy safe access.

Allie and Zeb went plant shopping and came back with lots of goodies to fill the pots that will come back year after year.
