Saying Goodbye to a Friend and Volunteer

We have some very sad news to share. Jean Scott, one of our long-term, Friday volunteers has recently passed away.

Jean had been volunteering at Dale Farm for twelve years. Jean started volunteering at the farm in 2013 and became a Dale Farm Trust, trustee in 2015.

Over the years, Jean was heavily involved in supporting the farm. Jean’s first priority was the welfare of the people we support; she enjoyed engaging and listening as well as supporting those with additional needs. As with all our volunteers, Jean encouraged those we support to be as self sufficient as possible in their work.

Jean was often found growing plants or in the craft room; she supported people to grow plants and make goods that could be sold to support the trust.

Jean was passionate about educating the people we support and was instrumental in the introduction of the John Muir Awards. The course was very successful and resulted in many of the people we support graduating from the course.

As happens to many of us as we get older, Jean started to suffer from mobility issues. Eventually, she could no longer volunteer at the farm, but continued to support the farm as a trustee as well as behind the scenes.

Jean lived a full life and had a forty one year career at Unilever, Port Sunlight. Jean was intelligent and had a keen interest in science, using her qualifications in Chemistry and Physics during her long career, before retiring in 2009.

Jean’s had a strong commitment to helping other people. Whilst working full-time, she volunteered for for St John’s Ambulance for fifteen years (1975 – 1990), rising to superintendent level of the Cadet Division.

All our volunteers bring different skills to the farm, but as with all our volunteers, Jean had a determination to help others; she used her natural warmth and compassion to brighten up our days.

We want to not only thank Jean for all her support, kindness and commitment to Dale Farm, but also for being a kind, caring and wonderful human being. All those who had the pleasure of knowing her were very saddened by your passing, but grateful to have known you – we will miss you.
