2026 Flower Propagation

For the past few years we have grown bedding plants from plug plants to sell at our spring fair. In 2026 we are trying something new. We are trying to diversify the horticultural skills of the people we support by growing bedding and perennial plants from seed and developing a programme of propagation.

Usually once our spring plant sale is over, our work with flowering plants slows down. Some of the people we support along with some staff and volunteers have mobility issues, therefore it is difficult for them to do the more physical work on the farm. By extending the flowering plant propagation period and diversifying what we grow; it is hoped that we will have more variation of work available throughout the year.

Perhaps one of the main issues we have experienced by just growing bedding flowering plants is that we can have a lot of plants that go to waste. We often have a surplus of bedding plants that cannot be stored and used for future years and therefore we plant as much of this excess around the farm. This new project aims to reduce the number of bedding plants grown and slowly introduce and expand the types of perennials that we grow, thereby generating less waste.

The idea is being implemented through our Development Team, which meets monthly to discuss and progress new ideas on the farm. We will be using the the experience of our staff and volunteers to start the project and monitor its progression. Hopefully, we will have more updates during the year and be able to bring you a wider selection of plants throughout the year.

We are always looking for volunteers with Horticultural knowledge, so if you fancy knowing more about us, you can contact us or just pop down during the week between 10am and 2pm.
