Preparation – Spring Cleaning

It has been a cold January, but that has not stopped us working. We have been planting, organising and tidying ready for the spring season. There is always plenty to do; even on the very coldest of days, we still manage to find things to do.

Cleaning

We try to recycle as much plastic as possible. As part of this effort we wash all our used plant pots to stop the possibility of fungal infections or other nasties being transmitted to our plants.

We clean the outdoor furniture and indoor planting areas making sure that everything is ready for the spring time.

Organisation

The people we support, volunteers and staff have been working hard to organise ordering, seeds and planting for the year. Zeb our manager has been building a spreadsheet to outline a planting and ordering schedule.

The people we support, staff and volunteers have been organising seeds and labels by month so that everything will be ready when we start planting.

Coral, pictured left has been working on ensuring that seeds are organised by type and all kept together with their labels.

Zeb has been keen to ensure that the people we support have clear plant reference cards, with images and clear instructions for each group of plants.

The farm is registered with the Soil Association and as such it is important that all our seeds as well as growing methods are all organic.

Planting Areas

When the ground isn’t frozen, we prepare the ground for the up and coming season. We have spread manure on the fields and polytunnels with manure. We also make sure that our wild flower area is given some tender loving care by getting rid of any invasive weeds.

Crafting and Woodwork

Work continues in the woodworking and craft areas of the farm. The craft room are preparing gifts ready for Easter. In the woodworking area we have been busy preparing shelving for our new library area and also repurposing old chairs and making them into useful chopping boards.
